In the former Griesheim industrial park, a huge 70-metre-high chimney is currently being dismantled: a remote-controlled excavator is slowly breaking it down from the top. The structure, through which hot exhaust air used to rise during production, is too large to simply knock down. The modern excavator is hoisted into position by a heavy-duty crane and operated by specialists from a nearby platform. A construction lift takes them up to what is probably the most airy workplace in western Frankfurt. Every day they move a little lower, whilst the excavator’s hydraulically adjustable supports compensate for the differences in level and ensure a horizontal position.
