WESTCOAST
CINEMA

07 – 24 August 2025
9 evenings of open-air cinema

Open-air cinema – between industrial charm, starry skies and the banks of the Main.

WESTCOAST Cinema brings selected films to the big screen: moving, aesthetic, unconventional. Whether a festival film with a supporting programme, a classic or a discovery – every evening is a cinematic summer moment.

Programme

Babygirl

Thu, 07 August – 9.00 pm

For the grand opening of our WESTCOAST CINEMA we make room…
for Harris Dickinson (aaahhh!!) and Nicole Kidman (ohaaaa!!), who reaches the peak of her acting career here.
The genre of the erotic thriller has rarely had really strong representatives in film history. Until now!
And ‘Babygirl’ also has the best bar, dance and club scenes in at least a decade of cinema. So we’ll have to get a few glasses of milk (cow, oats, soya anyway) and celebrate this evening in the spirit of the film with a George Michael song on continuous loop:

„That’s all I wanted
Something special, something sacred
In your eyes
For just one moment
To be bold and naked
At your side“

Director: Halina Reijn, USA 2024, 114 minutes, FSK: from 16 years, original version with German subtitles.

Admission, drinks and food from 7 pm, film starts around 9 pm if it is dark enough.

The Marching Band

Fri, 08 August – 9.00 pm

Why do comparatively simple scripts keep turning into such outstanding films in France? Perhaps because not only are both leading actors convincing in every second as the unequal pair of brothers, but even the smallest supporting role is so credibly and lovingly cast? Perhaps because Ravel’s Boléro has never been given a leading role like this before? Because he surprises us here, reconciles us, lets us dream – and connects us. Like kebabs on the canal, late at night for two …
Been to the cinema, touched!

Original title: ‘En fanfare’, Director: Emmanuel Courcol, France 2024, 104 minutes: FSK: without age restriction, German version.

Admission, drinks and food from 7 pm, film starts around 9 pm if it is dark enough.

Like a Complete Unknown

Sat, 09 August – 9.00 pm

Basically, a single sentence is enough for this film and musician biography event: Timothy Chalamet (plays) is Bob Dylan.
Or in one word: magical!

Director: James Mangold, USA 2024, 141 minutes, FSK: from 6 years, original version with German subtitles.

Admission, drinks and food from 7 pm, film starts around 9 pm if it is dark enough.

The Substance

Sun, 10 August – 9.00 pm

The First Cut is The Deepest … Demi, I know.
We wouldn’t want to be in her shoes tonight, but what Demi Moore delivers in ‘The Substance’ is nothing less than a ‘Once in a Liftetime’ performance that makes a long and eventful career shine in new splendour once again.
Demi Moore deserves all the awards in the film world for this. Her presence gets under your skin in more ways than one. And the toxic beauty mania of our time has never been made fun of more forcefully, more insanely and more wickedly than in this body horror-satire-trash-comedy mischief, which – in our opinion – should ideally be watched together and on the big screen! Sometimes perhaps with your eyes closed…

Director: Corlaie Fargeat, UK/USA/France 2024, 141 minutes, FSK: from 16 years, original version with German subtitles.

Admission, drinks and food from 7 pm, film starts around 9 pm if it is dark enough.

Call Me by Your Name

Fri, 15 August – 9.00 pm

Exclusively as part of the WESTCOAST FESTIVAL:
In 2017, the most beautiful summer film of all time made the first great love, desire, disappointment, ecstasy and the inner burning of youth tangible for us in all its nuances. It increased the desire for pond dipping, gelato, road biking, hiking and Italy almost immeasurably – and incidentally ushered in the never-ending Timothy Chalamet era.
What will that do to us in 2025?
We’ll get peaches, play Italo pop before and after the film (Mind Enterprises live!!!) and build a dance floor by the river. Then we’ll see what happens. Love My Way!

Director: Luca Guadagnino, Italy/France/USA, Brazil 2017, 133 minutes, FSK: from 12 years, original version with German subtitles.

Admission, drinks and food from 7 pm, film starts around 9 pm if it is dark enough. Italo Pop with Mind Entreprises before and after the film.

Conclave

Thu, 21 August – 8.15 pm

White smoke over Griesheim – Conclave at the WESTCOAST CINEMA!
Let’s get one thing straight: We would have shown this grandiose film about power games and crises of faith, about revenge and ravioli and the complex election of a new pope either way. The fact that the plot of the film virtually overlapped with the actual events is really only a side note.
The almost chamber play surprises with beguilingly beautiful images, Hitchcockian suspense, a very fine sense of humour and a fantastic plot twist. In addition, Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini and Stanley Tucci are so captivating – you would love to watch them for much longer. Now there’s only one thing left to do: have good weather!

Director: Edward Berger, USA/UK 2024, 121 minutes, FSK: from 6 years, original version with German subtitles.

Admission, drinks and food from 7 pm, film starts around 8.15 pm if it is dark enough.

The Penguin Lessons

Fri, 22 August – 8.15 pm

‘It’s practically impossible to look at a penguin and be angry,’ the newsreader Joe Moore is supposed to have once said. How right he was!
And he didn’t even know this one penguin, who is waddling with us to WESTCOAST today and is sure to change or at least enchant a few lives. But what’s it all about?
Tom (once again marvellous: Steve Coogan!), a grumpy teacher, comes to Buenos Aires in the 1970s to teach English at a boys’ boarding school. In the midst of the unrest caused by the military coup, his pupils are also rebellious and unteachable. This doesn’t necessarily make things any easier for Tom. But his life takes an unexpected turn one day when he saves the life of a penguin on an oil-polluted beach in Uruguay and is unable to get rid of it despite his best efforts. The penguin moves onto Tom’s terrace, becomes a loyal friend to him and a trusted penguin for his pupils.
It doesn’t get any cuter or more heart-warming at the cinema this year. And all based on a true and truly unbelievable story…

Director: Peter Cattaneo, Spain/UK 2024, 110 minutes, FSK: from 6 years, German version.

Admission, drinks and food from 7 pm, film starts around 8.15 pm if it is dark enough.

Dirty Dancing

Sat, 23 August – 8.15 pm

‘Sorry for the disruption, folks, but I always do the last dance of the season’
This time it’s the penultimate dance of the season, as Saturday evening seemed a little more tempting than Sunday.
And yes, as we all know, the best things can’t always be repeated. And yet, in this particular case, the attempt is almost a duty. So 2025 is also the year:

Baby & Johnny
Tree trunk & lake
Watermelon & lift figure

And we all dance in the moonlight on the banks of the Main in Griesheim. No matter what anyone says:
My baby belongs here!

Director: Emile Ardolino, USA 1987, 96 minutes, FSK: from 12 years, German version.

Admission, drinks and food from 7 pm, film starts around 8.15 pm if it is dark enough.

Flow

Sun, 24 August – 8.15 pm

Sorry, ‘Bambi’!
And sorry also to ‘Jungle Book’, ‘Toy Story’, ‘Up“ or “Ratatouille” … but: We are honestly very sure that ‘Flow’ is the most wonderful, tender, important and clever animated film we have ever seen. The whole world in one film. And with animals alone. And without words. Really: Without words!

Original title: ‘Straume’, Director: Gints Zilbalodis, Belgium/Latvia/France 2024, 88 minutes, FSK: from 6 years, without language.

Admission, drinks and food from 7 pm, film starts around 8.15 pm if it is dark enough.
